In the 1920’s and the 1930’s a significant number of private and
apartment buildings designed in the International Style were built in Jerusalem,
mainly in the town center and the Rehavia neighborhood.
The architects influenced by the works of Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius,
Erich Mendlson and the Bauhaus school of Art and Design largely immigrants from Central Europe,
designed the buildings in accordance with the local conditions,
particularly the construction in stone, the climate and the steep topography.
The architectural characteristics of this style feature carved-rounded elements,
strip windows, concrete overhangs and flat roofs.
The purpose of this tour is to enhance public awareness to one of the most interesting architectural
styles in Jerusalem and thus to the importance of preserving the building heritage of the city.
